Shantell Martin: Art That !!!
SXSW High: Hiatus Kaiyote
Hiatus Kaiyote is the quintessential music head’s band. Before we got out first dose of Hiatus Kaiyote at SXSW 2013, we kept hearing about them from some really dope musicians and DJs we know. The bar was set high and they did not disappoint. This is Hiatus Kaiyote’s first US tour and the American audience’s response, no matter which city, has been nothing short of reverence for this new band.

Also, with a name like Nai Palm and a voice to match, we can’t help but categorize this under Birds Like !!!
Kilo Kish: Music We !!!
Last year we saw Gilles Peterson plug Kilo by bringing her out at his LPR DJ set for a live PA. A well deserved plug. Listen to her new mixtape here.
Stimela – from anti-apartheid to deep self reflection
I love following the journey music and musicians take. And how apt is it that the title of this song is Stimela, which means train. I can honestly write a full essay about Wynter Gordon’s powerful control over her voice, the journey from the original Stimela by Hugh Masekela to her version on Doleo, and how the this phase in Gordon’s career is going to be exponentially more inspiring than her songwriting and dance music background. Listen to her perform Stimela on NPR’s soundcheck, and check out Masekela’s version below.
your drums, your love
AlunaGeorge’s sound is both timely and nostalgic. I don’t know how they do it, but it works.

An illustrated and rather aloof version of resident lucidreamers’ Birds Like !!!, Jenna Wortham, appeared in this Sunday’s NY Times sitting in a DeLorean revisiting her life on her phone. This is all types of awesome! We got our copy of the Sunday paper, but you can also read her article here. Illustration by Yuko Shimizu.
Summer Mantras
Pharrell, Melo-X and Yuna, collaborate on a lucidreamers’ summer favorite remix. Listen.

Esthero – The Many Times (feat. Miguel)
Seems like Esthero puts out an album every 7 years. If this is any indication of what it will sound like, then we’re excited and will overlook the seven year hiatus.
Wonderkiss present Heartfukk Part 1
Kissey Asplund + TK Wonder = Wonderkiss. Head over to their FB page for a free download of their 2 track project. Who knew Kissey made beats. Can’t wait for part två.
Mara Hruby – The Panties (MeLo-X Remix)
I absolutely loved From Her Eyes, Mara Hruby’s project covering Outkast, Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), The Roots, and others. Listen below to the MeLo-X remix of the Yasiin Bey cover, The Panties.
Boxing Kitten – Ethnic Rockability
Maya Lake is the brilliant woman behind the Boxing Kitten brand. The self-taught designer started contributing to the fashion scene with her playful prints and vintage inspired silhouettes a few years ago and has already managed to attract highly visible clients such as Beyonce, Erykah Badu and Alicia Keys. She describes Boxing Kitten designs as ‘ethinic rockability’. If you want to add both vim and sophistication to your wardrobe head over to the Boxing Kitten site and start shopping. They’re offering 20% off this weekend to celebrate the life of their 2011 Spring/Summer muse, Tura Satana. Use promo code ‘happybirthday’ at checkout for the discount
Marta Minujin: The World is So Boring
Arte! Arte! Arte! Marta Minujin’s simple but fervent motto leaves you with the feeling that in the absence of art, there remains little relevance to…anything. The Argentine phenomenon has been shocking the world with her larger-than-life work since the 1950′s, and has set a new standard for ephemeral art. From controversial paintings to dizzying installations, quirky fashion lines to LSD-inspired texts, breath-taking sculptures to prodigious effigies, and of course, the recurring reproduction and reinterpretation of the obelisk, Minujin’s art is nothing short of magic. Magic mushrooms, that is. Check out her latest projects here: http://www.marta-minujin.com/.
Yukimi Nagano: Birds like !!!
Seriously- Who doesn’t have a crush on Yukimi Nagano? With a voice like whipped honey butter, lyrics that can turn your day around, and an arresting stage presence, Yukimi, the lead vocalist of Little Dragon, can usually be found with ‘a sold-out crowd in the palm of her hands’. We love all members of Little Dragon equally, but we cannot deny that Ms. Nagano is a lucidreamers approved bird like !!!
Download Wildfire – Little Dragon’s collaboration with SBTRKT
Listen to Nightlight from Little Dragon’s upcoming album, Ritual Union. (Scheduled release – July 12th, 2011)
And then catch them on tour this summer. Yukimi is known to kirk out on various instruments in the middle of their set. This is not to be missed. Lucidreamers will be at the Roots Picnic on June 4th !!!
Another four letter word
We typically love love, but there are days when we need to rock out with Beth Ditto of Gossip. She recently released her solo project EP, which deviates from the indie rock/punk sounds of Gossip, but maintains a similar sentiment. If you’re looking for someone to validate your less than favorable feelings about love then Beth Ditto is you girl. Listen, below, to some of Gossip’s releases.
